Valentine Warner - Fishing on the Towy with Golden Grove

Valentine Warner

Fishermen are notorious exaggerators, but it’s certainly true to say that the River Towy is undoubtedly one of the very best sea trout rivers in the UK; winding through some truly stunning countryside in this fantastic corner of Carmarthenshire.

Booking fishing can be compared to playing darts blindfolded whilst standing on a trampoline... it’s tricky, especially knowing where to find those wily salmon and sea trout. However, having now visited The Golden Grove Fishery near the beautiful town of Llandeilo (a fantastic destination for foodies), it confirmed that this gem of a river offers a very strong possibility of success in high or low water. The river is positively wriggling with returning sea trout, and in our purple patches there seemed to be more fish than water.

The beats are numerous along this stretch, all with that distinctly fishy feel - and, when we arrived, our confidence was stoked with numerous sightings of moving fish. There is a time honoured and rather absurd role-play between fisherman and ghillie where the former, in a state of excitable hope, asks the latter to predict success.  Yet Jamie, the brilliant head keeper at Golden Grove Fishery, had the confident twinkle in his eye of a man who knows he’s the gatekeeper of a most abundant fishery.  I’d advise booking him if you can!

Spinning in dropping water, we caught a lot of sea trout. I was broken twice by big cunning fish and some of the shocking takes were so aggressive they almost made me want to drop the rod, turn heel and flee over the fields. Double figure thumpers are common throughout the season. In one and a half days, I took 15 sea trout and 2 salmon, losing numerous fish too. On our last day, 61 fish were landed by 8 rods on Golden Grove with plenty being 10lb and up; the biggest weighing in at magnificent 15.12lb.

The Towy is a river that I want to really understand and get to know, until I am too old to thread a fly. 'Out of the way' is a term that excites fishermen and I will do the drive to that fantastic corner of Carmarthenshire many more times, with a smile on my face and hot anticipation in my heart. In a most selfish way, I do not want to advertise this fishery so that I may never find it booked up. But, alas, I must strongly suggest pack your rods and head to The Golden Grove as it really is golden; genuinely some of the best fishing I’ve ever had!
